Resumo: OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the perception of quality of life at work (QWL) of civil servants who predominantly carry out administrative activities and of servants who predominantly carry out technical activities in a higher education institution (HEI).METHODS: The sample consisted of 277 technical-administrative employees who work in academic centers and administrative units of the HEI, from elementary to higher positions and representing 51.39% of the population. To assess the QWL, the hybrid model (performance and frequency model) developed by Freitas and Souza (2009) was applied and some questions were added. Quartile analysis was used to identify the most critical issues in terms of QLW level.RESULTS: Most employees classified the QWL as regular, both in terms of the performance of the HEI, and in the frequency of occurrence of factors in the HEI. However, a significant percentage of administrative employees rated QLW as bad in the HEI concerning the frequency of occurrence of factors. Priority actions to improve QLW in the HEI must be focused on critical issues related to three aspects: fair and adequate compensation, career opportunities and conditions in the work environment. Public finance regulations for fiscal management can limit the improvement of QLW in terms of fair and adequate compensation and career opportunities in public HEIs.CONCLUSIONS: The questions assigned to the four priority levels are approximately the same, according to the perception of technical employees and administrative employees, which indicates that improvements in QVT could benefit both categories of employees. However, it is important to use the methodology to analyze QWL in each academic center (and possibly in each sector) of the HEI, due to the particular and specific conditions in the work environment in each administrative unit.
