Resumo: In this article, we present the results of a study about the professionals who work as explainers in Brazilian museums and science centers. For data collection, we used an online questionnaire, with 42 closed and open questions, answered by 298 people from 87 institutions in 16 states and the Federal District. Our results indicate that most of the professionals who answered the online questionnaire are young women between 20 and 29 years old, with a graduation or high school education and with up to two years of experience in the area. If, on the one hand, there is an advance in the training of these professionals, with 90.0% of the respondents claiming to have received initial training in the area, on the other hand, their employment relationships are still vulnerable, as indicated by 66.2% of the interviewees. So, the data collected here indicate the need to create better conditions for the professionalization of these fundamental social actors for the scientific culture of Brazil.
