OBJECTIVE: Compare the nutritional status of a group of school children, residents in Petrolina from three World Health Organization (WHO) (1998) criteria, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) (COLE et al., 2000), establishing cutoffs ideal for determining the nutritional status in the region.METHOD: Correlative study of cross-sectional school-based, not probabilistic and intentional sample. Participated, 50 students of both sexes (8.80± 0.40 years), students of elementary school, living in Petrolina/PE, members the activities of the Tutorial Education Program (PET) – Biomechanics. The assessment of nutritional status was performed by calculating BMI. The comparison of the best cutoff points for the establishment of nutritional status was held by WHO criteria, CDC and IOTF. The agreement between the indicators was evaluated by Kappa statistics (k). RESULTS: Overweight was only found with the boys. Obtained an excellent agreement between the criteria of the WHO and CDC, k=0.882 (p<0.001) and regular concordances between the IOTF and WHO (k=0.012; p=0.041) and IOTF and CDC (k=0.019; p=0.048). CONCLUSION: The criteria of the WHO and the CDC have proven to be the most suitable to assess the nutritional status of the population tested, they are similar to those found in studies other regions of Brazil. |
