Neoplasms; Quality of life; Anxiety; Depression; Oncological nursing. OBJECTIVE: To compare the perception of quality of life and the presence of anxious and depressive symptoms of patients undergoing chemotherapy, users of a public hospital and a private hospital in the city of Maceió/AL.METHODS: Observational cross-sectional study, carried out with patients undergoing oncologic treatment with chemotherapy in a public and private hospital in Maceió from November 2015 to July 2016. The QV was evaluated using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC) and the presence of anxiety and depressive symptoms were observed by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). The collected data were organized in electronic database and analyzed quantitatively through statistical software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), respecting the distribution nature of the studied variables.RESULTS: The sample consisted of 65 patients, 33 (50.9%) were attended in a hospital that was contracted to the Unified Health System (SUS) and 32 (49.1%) in the private hospital. The mean age was 54.2 years (±11.8 SD), with no difference between groups (p=0.184). Much of the sample was female (67.7%). It was observed that the group of individuals treated through the private covenant had a greater possibility of presenting signs of anxiety compared to the SUS group (n=26, 81.2% versus n=7, 21.2%, respectively) (p<0.001). The frequency of individuals with depressive symptoms was higher in the group served by the private agreement (n=27, 84.3% versus n=7, 21.2%, respectively) (p<0.001). In the physical, cognitive and social functions, the mean was 73.2 points for SUS patients and 62.6 points for patients attended in a private hospital (p=0.005). At symptom scales, the mean was 29.7 for public hospital patients and 34.9 for private hospital clients (p=0.043).CONCLUSIONS: The disease and the chemotherapy treatment seem to have a more negative impact on the QoL of the patients being treated by the private covenant. However, the presence of anxious and depressive symptoms was quite frequent in the users of both hospital services. A QV foi avaliada por meio do protocolo European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC) e a presença de sintomas ansiosos e depressivos foram observados pela Escala Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD).
