Resumo: The recently released draft for the network procedures, in which it is shown an increase in the amount of technologies required for future expansions of the Brazilian power grid, is the main motivation for this research. A literature review is carried out regarding fault location, concerning contemporary technologies applied in power substations, and presenting alternate solutions that not only seek to add new functionalities, but allow cost reduction in operation, maintenance and availability of electricity supply. Additionally, the protection of transmission systems is addressed, regarding the types of protection relays, from the electromechanical and electronic relays, up to the recent technology of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) in the fault elimination process. It is presented the IEC 61850 norm, concerning communication protocols developed for the electrical sector, an important subject to delve due to the current state of development of the Brazilian’s National Interconnected System (SIN), which changed the design and operation of electric power substations. This aspect is corroborated by the increment of new algorithms to perform the fault location through traveling waves, for instance. It is also presented the Synchronized Phasor Measurement System (SPMS), in regards of the challenges to be overcome to allow the National System Operator (ONS) to monitor the SIN more accurately. From the discussion of the literature, cases of applications in physical installations of transmission agents were explored, observing the needs of improvement, the benefits provided by the use of these technologies and the analysis on the records that aid in the decision making.
