Resumo: The increases in the electric energy demand and the electric power consumption have motivated to seek for sources that are sustainable and increasingly important nowadays. One of the featured renewable sources is the grid-connected photovoltaic systems (grid-connected PV systems), which over other solutions, it is the technology with the highest growth rate and the highest decreased in the costs. This work studies the economic viability of grid-connected photovoltaic systems in a long term, in order to determine the return-on-initial-investment time of an installation of a system. Therefore, it was analyzed all of the expenses from the installation and maintenance of the system and also, it was designed the electric energy rates considering three different scenarios (A, B and C) that take into account possible different economic situations. In order to ascertain the viability and the payback period of the initial investment, it was used the following economic indicators: Payback Simple, Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return. In addition, it was made a simulation of the application of the money saved on electricity bills, in the "poupança", Bank Deposit Certificate and Real Estate letter of Credit. Also, it was simulated the hypothesis of applying the money of the initial capital directly into three types of investment. By comparing the simulations, it is concluded that even with a high initial investment, the installation of a grid-connected photovoltaic systems in a long term is viable and with possible profitability.
