Resumo: The main objective of the present work is to create the project of an alternative hydrostatic transmission to be used in SAE Baja prototype vehicles. Hydrostatic transmissions are sets of hydraulic pumps and motors used to transmit power, under the form torque and rotation, through a confined fluid. The SAE Baja competition is promoted by the Society of Automotive Engineers and has as proposition the project and fabrication of a single-passenger offroad prototype vehicle done by teams of engineer students, who compete against other universities in several racing-tests. This work begins with the review of the necessary theoretical background, that include hydraulics, the SAE Baja competition, dynamic simulations and combustion engines control. This step is followed by the collection of the transmission project goals and its inputs. These informations are used to the preliminary calculation and design of the four alternatives of hydrostatic transmissions proposed. These alternatives have their behavior and performance simulated with the dynamic simulations software, AMESim. The results of these simulations are compared with the project goals, and one can notice that all of them meet partially the desired objectives. The simulation’s results of the four different systems are then compared with each other, to find out the best alternative, between the ones proposed. The alternative that showed the best results was the rear 4x2 transmission with a variable displacement pump and a fixed displacement motor, open-circuit with direct control. Finally, an experiment of a Load-Sensing's control system of a variable displacement pump is conducted, so to obtain a comparison between the simulated models in AMESim and some aspects of the real behavior of hydraulic systems. The data obtained in the experiment and the simulation’s results of the same system, done in AMESim, are very close, and it is possible to affirm that the behavior seen during the experiment was reproduced by the simulations. The simulations and experiment denote the possibility of applying the developed alternatives to Baja vehicles.
