Resumo: The continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been developed a long time, mainly in the automotive area, and basically differs from the other not to use a primary system with gears. The CVT is an innovation used successfully in agricultural machines in several countries. In Europe, North America and Asia there are tractors with CVT. However in Brazil, such technology is still non-existent. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the feasibility of the use of the CVT transmission in Brazilian applications. To achieve this goal, was carried out a technical and economic analysis. From an economic point of view, maintenance costs were analysed and tractor consumption with CVT and compared with data from a tractor without CVT. In technical analysis were compared the technical characteristics of automatic transmission with the CVT, both mounted in the same tractor, the exception of the transmission. Applied the methodology QFD (Quality Function Deployment) to identify the characteristics deemed relevant to the Brazilian customer in relation to the transmission. As the tractors analysed are currently marketed in Europe, the performance comparison between them allows to be understood the advantages and disadvantages of these broadcasts and with this cross this information with the characteristics identified as relevant by the Brazilian customer. It was found that the tractor with CVT has a higher cost, 5.4% higher, but has important differentiators for clients, such as greater comfort, greater number ratios, ease of use, and others.
