The Ream Team, a group of senior mechanical engineering students from the University of Alabama, will compete in the ASME competition titled “Manufacturing the Future” in March 2016. The goal of the competition is to create a paper folding and launching machine that propels a paper projectile the greatest possible distance while the machine occupying the smallest possible volume. The executed project was assembled using additive manufacturing processes. The chosen projectile was the paper airplane. The machine has four sections, where three are related to the paper handling and the forth is the paper launching. Solutions are presented for various ways of folding and creasing a sheet of paper. The paper launch introduces the concept of converting an angular velocity into a linear velocity. Such project competing in the 2016 competition obtained a satisfactory result, despite the mentioned failures. |
