Resumo: Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze is a tree symbol of Southern Brazil because is the species with the highest expression of Araucaria Forest, with up to 40% of individuals and dominating the upper canopy of the forest. The Araucaria Forest was very explored in the past, and in consequence araucaria is on the endangered species list. For this reason, Brazilian law prohibited exploitation of this species, thus causing an economic devaluation and thus stimulate landowners to prevent natural regeneration of Araucaria. For this reason it is extremely important to conduct tests of provenances of Araucaria, to indicate the best seeds for planting, aiming at the production of wood or pine nuts as an alternative to increase the income of farmers, and thereby encouraging the preservation of the species by increased plantings. This study aimed to verify the initial establishment of seedlings of different provenances (places of occurrence) of Araucaria angustifolia grown in full sun or under shade in Dois Vizinhos, Paraná. To implement the study were used pine nuts of 11 provenances from southern Brazil and one provenance of Minas Gerais. The pine nuts of all provenances were sown in the nursery to check the potential emergency and directly in the field in open area (in full sun) and in the forest area of Eucalyptus sp. (shaded). Weekly evaluations were performed emergency within 90 days of sowing and quarterly evaluations of survival, height and stem diameter of 134 to 311 days after sowing. It was found that all provenances had higher emergence when sown in shaded area, in relation for emergency in full sun area, similar to the emergence obtained in the nursery. Besides of lower emergency, pine nuts sown in full sun area had high mortality after 232 days of sowing, not allowing further evaluation of seedling development. In the shaded area the provenance of Minas Gerais, had higher emergence, survival and development in height and diameter in relation to all provenances. The initial establishment of seedlings of Araucaria angustifolia is only feasible with seedling gears shaded area. For cultivation in Dois Vizinhos, Paraná, preferably it is recommended the use of seedlings of pine nuts originated from Bocaina de Minas, Minas Gerais.
