Resumo: The concern with the combined price of fossil fuels environment encourages the development of research related to harvesting and potential renewable energy sources, among them the forest biomass. This consists mainly of waste from processes of harvesting, wood processing and the energy forests. The aim of this study was to examine a method of drying logs of Pinus taeda in order to obtain the moisture content which has become the largest gain in good calorific value and therefore a better use of the waste. For this, the logs were placed in the courtyard of the company for 54 days and subsequently processed into chips. Five samples of chips and needles were collected on certain days, for later determination of moisture from the material, power and useful heat chemical analysis. We conclude the outdoor drying of needles and logs of Pinus taeda contributes to the moisture content decreased and there was no significant effect on the percentages of fixed carbon, ash and volatiles.
