Resumo: The modernization of agriculture began in the mid-1960s and provided an increase in the productivity of Brazilian crops. Currently, Brazil is considered one of the largest food suppliers in the world. However the production method used, which is based on the use of the “technological package” and it was disseminated by the Green Revolution, its brought social and environmental consequences. Aditionally that natural resources are limited, more sustainable food production methods are essential to ensure the food security of the constantly growing population. In this way, soil microorganisms can be used as a tool to provide nutrients and protect plants against pathogens. Among these microorganisms are the Efficient Microorganisms (EM), a microbial community composed by fungi and bacteria from forest soils and with beneficial potential in plant development. Thus, the present study evaluated the effects of home-prepared and commercially Efficient Microorganisms (EM) on the development of the organic maize (Zea mays L.) variety BRS Caimbé by evaluating the parameters: plant height, root length, fresh and dry mass of the roots and also the aerial part. Cultivable bacterial and fungal populations of the different types of EM used were quantified indicating a predominance of bacterial communities in the composition of EM. The results showed at for different EM preparations that were found significant results just for root length (p <0,05%). For the other parameters analyzed in this study no significant difference was observed.
