Resumo: The improper solid waste disposal can cause damage to human health and the environment. Thus, selective collection and recycling are alternatives to minimize this damage. However, several factors can affect the achievement of the recycling process, intensifying the existence of large amount of tailing among recyclables destined for selective collection. Tailings are solid wastes after all treatment and recovery possibilities have been exhausted, and must have their final disposal environmentally appropriate. However, the overload of these waste materials destined for selective collection causes failure in the sorting process. Thus, the objective of this work was to perform the physical characterization of recyclable urban solid waste generated in the city of Francisco Beltrão and forwarded to Marrecas Recycling Cooperative (MARCOP). Identifying the causes of tailing generation among recyclable waste and developing strategies to reduce these materials in selective collection. It was observed that 28% of the waste destined to the cooperative was tailings. In the gravimetric composition of tailings, the highest rate was organic waste (44%), followed by plastics (23%), the failure in the sorting process had the index of 9%. As it is recommended that non-recyclable materials should not be sent for selective collection, the main cause of tailings generation was due to the segregation error, addressing all materials of the gravimetric composition of the tailings, except the materials of the sorting process error, in regarding lack of trade, the only material include in this group were plastics. Concluding, therefore, that the main strategies to reduce waste are: environmental education aimed at the population, focusing on information and communication technologies, especially on the internet; and the identification of new partnerships for the commercialization of recyclable plastics.
