Resumo: In Brazil, the discard of solid waste generated due to the exacerbated production of goods and products over decades became a problematic question added to the lack of treatment for solid waste and to the inadequate ways of final disposal, such as open-air dumps. The degradation of organic and inorganic fraction of urban solid waste associated with stormwater results in contamination occurrences for the infiltration of leachate, which can also carry heavy metals through soil horizons until groundwater, being a warning indicative of the high contamination risk to the environment and to the population health. The closure of landfills and waste disposal site must be realised with the introduction and compaction of the soil so that the cover layer does not allow hydraulic conductance and minimises pollution and environmental degradation. Thereby, studying the geotechnical properties is essential for assessing impacted areas and for avoiding numerous environmental problems due to leachates conductance. The research area is the former waste disposal waste in Rolândia-PR located in the Northern portion of the city. The deposition of urban solid waste occurred up to the year 2002 when it was decreed the closure of the activities at the site. The area was divided in three distinct parts: downstream, slope, and the cover layer of the waste disposal site. Some soil properties were then determined, such as the coefficient of permeability (K) or hydraulic conductivity, which is the infiltration rate of a fluid in a porous media. At the non-saturated zone, by means of the infiltration tests utilising a Guelph permeameter, low soils permeability was obtained, varying from 10-5 cm/s to 10-4 cm/s. Thereby, the leachate can reach the soil and spread through the groundwater flow lines.
