Resumo: The changes and adaptations to production systems and new approaches to production have required a closer look at people as well as the development of new skills and competencies to the detriment of the company's systemic vision and future strategic positioning in the market (Batalha, 2008). The production engineer as a broadly trained professional who has dealt directly with the prevailing business context should, according to Chiavenato (2010), present competences in the field of people management, faced with this, the starting question that guided this work was: how to improve the matrix of competences used by Alpha's Coextrusion sector? For this, a qualitative descriptive research was used, as well as a documentary analysis of the competency matrix of the studied company, which characterized the use of secondary data and the use of a case study, closed and open questions, i.e. use of primary data. The data analysis was performed as content analysis. The result led to the following conclusion: that the company applies in its competency matrix, congruently, the set of technical, human and social competences according to the outstanding theorists at work. But there is an accessory valuation of technical skills and the others are almost nil. There is no congruence of information from the company's mission, vision and values with the attributes distributed in the human and social competences groups evidenced in the company's competency matrix and, finally, the research leader realizes the importance of human and social competences, marking almost all of those listed in the questionnaire and also several of the technical skills listed by exchanging some. This gives the understanding that the leader has much to add to the restructuring of the company's competency matrix, making it a real tool for analysis, reflection and organizational development that should be adapted to the company's sectors to the detriment of its strategic objectives.
