The technical qualification of the workforce is of great interest to the industries, because it composes a significant competitive advantage, besides the fact that companies depend on specialized workers (DUTRA, 2009). There are a number of workers who cannot take technical courses because they have not finished high school. The purpose of the study is to carry out a survey of the level of schooling of Londrina’s workers and their interest in middle-level technical courses, more specifically what proportion of the local workforce has not completed high school and would be interested in this type of vocational training. The present research is qualitative and quantitative. Historical data on population enrollment were collected, based on the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The population object of this research is the total of workforce of the city of Londrina. It was estimated, therefore, that this population is around 242,189 people. The research instrument consists of a questionnaire with 23 questions and the number of 389 Londrina’s workers interviewed exceeds the minimum sample size, 377. It was found that the proportion of Londrina’s workers whose education is less than full secondary education is 39.1% and it is consistent with national and state indicators. Of those workers who did not finish high school, 73.7% are interested in completing their education. At the same time, 57.9% are interested in taking a technical course. The results indicated the need for some program that would complement existing ones to assist the education of the workers of Londrina, so that they can enter the professional education. It is hoped that this work can be considered of relevance for the future of the basic and professional education of the workers of Londrina, and that it has positive consequences for the city and its inhabitants. |
