Resumo: According to Brow, Lemay and Bursten (2005), chemistry is the study of the properties of materials and the changes they undergo, and to understand these transformations, several scientific concepts are needed, among them the conservation of mass. However, this concept can be difficult to understand, which leads students to develop alternative conceptions to understand such theory (Silva, Souza and Marcondes, 2008). Therefore, due to the difficulty of the subject, an individualized educational strategy is necessary and, among many, the investigative experiment was chosen, because in this the student is an active participant of his knowledge, from the interpretation of the problem to the raising of hypotheses for its solution ( Oliveira, 2012) and, according to Motta et al. (2013), by this method the student is more committed to their learning. Therefore, this work aims to elaborate an investigative material on mass conservation and to identify through the application of the material the conceptions of the students of the first year of high school about the conservation of the masses and how they use it to explain the chemical transformations.
