The work "Illustrated Maps of the Historic Center of Curitiba" exposes the construction of a wayfinding graphic artefacts aimed at providing guidance to tourists and visitors, as well as reflecting my own artistic style. The Research into the history of the historic city center, consisting of part of the São Francisco neighborhood and midtown, provided sufficient and accurate data to inspire the developlment of the artifact. During the research it was also necessary to seek knowledge related to cartography and design, since both deal with common issues in terms of graphic language (Components and variables, graphic symbology) and are concerned with usability and readability issues. The graphic diary sketchbook was used through out the design process, this tool was very useful during the investigation because allowed controlling and the test of new ideas and prototypes. The result represents the designer’s search for equilibrium, respect for cartographic rules and as well the search for innovative ideas. The final result are two alternatives that are similar in terms of usability, but one design was aimed to have greater aesthetic appeal. Both alternatives represent the compromise between the author’s artistic personality and traditional rules of map design. Furthermore, the "Illustrated Maps of the Historic Center of Curitiba" project opens possibilities for the evolution and application of the theme in other wayfiding products. |
