Resumo: In the recent centuries, the urbanization phenomenon has been responsible for many impacts on the environment, including the modification of the hydrological cycle in urban centers, where the rate of permeable areas decreases every day, prejudicing the correct routing of rainwater. Thus, it is necessary the studies on techniques used in the rainwater drainage systems in these urbanized areas. The execution of works aimed to minimize the damage and impacts generated by urban systems to the hydrological cycle, may present lacks of planning, implementation and maintenance of the drainage works, besides social and environmental issues. In order to identify some of these variables, this paper proposes a qualitative study case in a work of urban drainage in the city of Cornélio Procópio-PR. A theoretic referential about the history and the most effective methods in rainwater drainage in urban areas has been proposed. Then, a work analysis made with the system design implemented using the Rational Method. With the analysis, it was possible to observe that the quality of the services performed was hampered by mismanagement, defective financial budget, inefficient methods applied for the city, poor supervision and bureaucracy in the processes, which caused delays in the schedule or even stoppages of the work. Therefore, it is concluded that the information gathered may be useful to cause a rethinking about some issues related to this type of work, suggesting new technologies (such as those used in developed countries) with a bigger focus on retention and reuse of rainwaters, in order to cause the least possible impact on the local water cycle.
