Resumo: The lightweight concrete employment in prefabricated materials comes mainly from the benefits arising from the reduction in the density thereof, as a reduction of cost of transportation and storage of it. Moreover, without a doubt the use of aggregates in concrete production should take into consideration their environmental impact. Therefore, the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) as added back beyond its low density, the possibility of the same waste reuse. In this paper we analyzed the influences of the adoption of EPS as aggregate in the production of dry concrete. This study aimed to verify the feasibility of adopting EPS in partial replacement of coarse aggregate to produce not only blocks but also of any cementitious material that is produced with dry concrete. There were two batches of molded cylindrical specimens with dimensions of 10x20 cm (diameter x height), each batch containing 7 specimens, with 6 samples from each batch subjected to axial compression test (3 aged 3 days and 3 aged 7 days) leaving the last test specimen from each batch for determining the specific mass of the concrete. From the results, it was possible to make a comparison of resistance and weight of the conventional dry concrete and dry concrete plus lightweight aggregate.
