Resumo: Traffic accidents are constantly concerning society due to the high economic and social costs involved to it. The aim for the reduction of the accidentality indexes, starting from the planning of the road system, involves the identification and prioritization of critical segments for intervention studies. This study, through traffic surveys, database queries and investigation of contributing factors for the occurrence of traffic accidents, seeks for alternatives to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents located at critical points in the urban perimeter of Pato Branco - PR. In the city, currently, several information related to traffic accidents are collected. However, the analysis and treatment of the data base is still not performed efficiently by the competent agencies. This analysis, together with the assessment of the place of occurrence, provides indications of the causes of the accidents, which makes it possible to suggest modifications in the infrastructure and operation of the critical sites for the improvement of road safety. It is also pointed out the need for investments in the collection, manipulation and application of traffic accident data in the city of Pato Branco - PR, especially in a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform, which would provide greater efficiency in the data processing and, consequently, better targeting of municipal public resources aimed at increasing road safety.
