Mia Couto is considered one of the most important writers in Portuguese Language and he is one of the most translated writers in the world. His works highlight Africa and its africanities, myths, legends, rituals and traditions, creating through re-creative language, a link between ancestry and modernity. Given this and from the observation of the humor and creativity with who Mia names her characters, it was sought, in this research, to analyze the meanings of the names of the characters in the context of the narrative Terra Sonâmbula (1992/2016), considering the historical context of Mozambique, what is marked by the struggle for independence and the internal and armed civil conflict. Thus, for the accomplishment of this work, a bibliographic research was carried out, the light of theoreticians dealing with the African Literatures and Mozambican Literature, as Francisco Noa (2015;2017), Pires Laranjeira (1992;1995) and Ana Mafalda Leite (2012). As well as those discussing the onomastic and the anthroponymy as Maria Vicentina de Paula do Amaral Dick (1992;1998), Patricia de Jesus Carvalhinhos (2005) e Marcia Sipavicius Seide (2016). It was found in this study that the name both within the literature and outside it is in the most cases, related to the being named, since it can, denote meanings that relate to the aspects, social, political, historical and social of a certain people and that the onomastic and anthroponymy provide a great theoretical support for the completion of the work. O presente trabalho tem como tema a Literatura Africana de Língua Portuguesa, mais especificamente a Literatura Moçambicana, na qual está inserida a escrita poética literária do escritor Mia Couto, autor de diversos romances, contos e poesias. Mia Couto é considerado um dos mais importantes escritores moçambicanos em Língua Portuguesa e um dos mais traduzidos no mundo. Suas obras destacam a África e suas africanidades, os mitos, as lendas, os rituais e as tradições, criando por meio da linguagem, um elo entre a ancestralidade e a modernidade. Diante disso, e a partir da constatação do humor e da criatividade com que Mia nomeia as suas personagens, procurou-se, nesta pesquisa, analisar os significados dos nomes de algumas das personagens no contexto da narrativa Terra Sonâmbula (1992/2016), considerando-se o contexto histórico de Moçambique, que é marcado pela luta pela Independência e pelo conflito civil interno e armado. Assim, para a realização deste trabalho, foi feita uma pesquisa bibliográfica, a luz de teóricos que tratam a respeito das Literaturas Africana de Língua Portuguesa e Moçambicana, como Francisco Noa (2015; 2017), Pires Laranjeira (1995; 2012) e Ana Mafalda Leite (2012), bem como dos que discutem a onomástica e a antroponímia, como Maria Vicentina de Paula do Amaral Dick (1992; 1998), Patricia de Jesus Carvalhinhos (2007) e Marcia Sipavicius Seide (2016).
