Resumo: The present final paper “The transposition of Women’s role in translations of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen” has developed a descriptive-comparative analysis about two translations of the work Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. The translations were one written by Lúcio Cardoso, published in 1982 by Abril Cultural, and the other was made by Roberto Leal Ferreira in 2015, and published by the publisher Martin Claret. The objectives of this work were: to investigate aspects of the customs of the nineteenth century women in order to reveal the social production context of the source text; to analyze the constitution of the female characters through the plot, linguistic constructions and lexical choices of the source text; to present the criticism reported by Jane Austen for English society through the patriarcal behaviors of that time; to verify the transposition of the critical elements and the configuration of the characters in order to contrast the source text of Jane Austen and the two translations listed for this research. Thus, it was possible to analyze the transposition of the female characters in Pride and Prejudice, in the two translations listed here. For the development of this study, the theoretical assumptions elaborated by Itamar Even Zohar (1990) of the Polissystems studies, by José Lambert and Hendrik Van Gorp (2006) and their scheme to analyse the translations. The postulates of Andre Lefevere (1992) served as the basis for discussions about translation as rewriting. Finally, it was verified that the translations of Pride and Prejudice analyzed here showed marked features of domestication and the foreignization, and that, when they got inserted in the Brazilian literary polysystem, they served as a report of the situation experienced by english women in the nineteenth century.
