Resumo: This paper presents a feasibility study for a photovoltaic (PV) system installed in a residence located at Pato Branco, Paraná. The relevance of the solar energy as a renewable energy source and as an abundant energy source in Brazil is highlighted. Also, the conversion of solar energy to electric energy is described through the photovoltaic effect, which is observed in photovoltaic cells. The photovoltaic cell is the fundamental element of photovoltaic systems, which can be isolated (off-grid) or connected to the electric distribution network (on-grid). The study presented here is established on photovoltaic systems on-grid, describing the operation of the elements that these systems are comprised of. Since these systems are connected to the distribution network, the distributed generation (DG) is presented and its importance on electric energy generation is highlighted alongside standards that rule this generation modality in Brazil and Paraná. A photovoltaic system is sized accordingly to the literature and accordingly to data regarding average energy consumption of a residence in Pato Branco and regarding average irradiation. The feasibility study is then undertaken using the sized photovoltaic system and using factors regarding the economic scenario related to residential energy consumption. The results are obtained through the Discounted Payback indicator, which presents the length of time that an investment needs to produce financial feedback considering time value of money
