Resumo: The present paper approaches damages and failures in mixed ceramic cutting tool when machining AISI 8640 medium-carbon low-alloy steel. Tests were conduced by a well-graded methodology made according to technical information and the literature. Machining tests and superficial roughness measurements in each pass were executed, so the relations between interchange of cutting parameters and the superficial integrity of the tool could be narrowed. According to the results, it was noticed that the increase of arithmetic mean roughness is directly proportional to the increase of feed rate and cutting depth, as well as material removal rate, impairing surface quality, as seem and proved by literature. Besides, it was noticed that the main types of wear associated to the ceramic cutting tool when machining low alloy steel were flank wear and crater wear, due to adhesion and material dragging on its surface.
