Resumo: The 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is an explosive that has dominated the military-industrial production since 1902, reaching its peak in the world wars. Because of its wide application has a strong importance in the economy and environmental contamination due to its toxic nature. The process of manufacture of TNT is accomplished in three stages, the final stage is the purification process, in which two wastewater are produced, the wastewater from the first wash is called "Yellow Water", which consists of oxidation products and impurities of the process, the second washing is carried out with the addition of sodium sulphite and this wastewater is called "Red Water". The Red Water contains various forms of asymmetric TNT. This work presents the characterization of the wastewater “Red Water” from the nitroaromatic explosives industry using high-performance liquid chromatography and physico-chemical analyses. The results of chemical analysis revealed that the expected compound 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, 2-amino-4 ,6-dinitrotoluene and 4-amino-2 ,6-dinitrotoluene are not present in the effluent. The physico-chemical analyses revealed that parameters such as total solids, organic nitrogen, COD and total phenols were presented at high levels, the wastewater in question being a potential pollutant.
