As the improvement in the conditions of traffic of the vehicles increases the number of them in the roads, it is almost impossible to find a solution for the urban public space focusing only for road transport. In addition, there is now an aspiration for living, safe, healthy and sustainable cities, in order to achieve these four goals, the population must be invited to walk. In this context, the present work proposes to study a section of the recently reformed Avenida Brasil in the city of Cascavel - PR, Brazil, through the application of the walkability index, developed by ITDP Brasil. For that, information collected in the field and preexisting data were used, the maximum speed allowed for example. The results demonstrate that road safety needs immediate intervention and that the quality of the space is acceptable, although it is far from ideal. Ao se fazer uma retrospectiva histórica das cidades, é possível verificar que após a Revolução Industrial o foco do planejamento urbano foi centrado na acomodação do tráfego de veículos e pedestres. Como a melhoria nas condições de circulação dos veículos fazem aumentar o número dos mesmos nas vias, é quase que impossível encontrar uma solução para o espaço público urbano apenas visando o transporte rodoviário. Além disso, atualmente há uma aspiração por cidades vivas, seguras, saudáveis e sustentáveis, para se atingir esses quatro objetivos é preciso que a população se sinta convidada a caminhar. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho se propõe a estudar um trecho da recém reformada Avenida Brasil na cidade de Cascavel-PR, através da aplicação do índice de caminhabilidade desenvolvido pelo ITDP Brasil. Para isso, foram utilizadas informações levantadas em campo e também dados preexistentes, a exemplo da velocidade máxima permitida.
