Power line inspections are of great importance to maintain the supply of electricity. Periodic inspections can help to reduce the costs with fines imposed on the utilities resulting from the interruption of power supply. But to perform it periodically, using the conventional methods, incur in high costs. Quadcopters have been widely used in various research sectors having major advantages like: cost reduction due to the growth of this market; the evolution/miniaturization of LIPO batteries and motors allowing a miniaturized design; and increased flight range. Another advantage is the improved perfomance of the flight controllers that keeps the UAV stable enough in the air, thus allowing high-resolution photos which is a very important feature for inspection services. Joining these points mentioned, this work aims to show the problem and the costs of inspection of power lines and propose a safe and economical way to monitor the transmission lines using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that detects and finds, autonomously a simulated transmission line in a controlled environment, being guided by the magnetic field generated by this line. |
