Resumo: Ship transport has been the world’s main used modal for trading goods, the main gateway for goods from different countries by means of treaties and trade agreements. In Brazil there are 37 organized ports scattered throughout its coastline, which represent a great share of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The port efficiency is a variable that measures the productivity of ports regarding to their infrastructure, and there are some quantitative methods to measure it. Considering these aspects, the main objective of this study is to measure the port efficiency of the ten largest Brazilian ports, Santos/SP, Itaguaí/RJ, Paranaguá/PR, Vitória/ES, Rio Grande/RS, São Francisco do Sul/SC, Salvador/BA, Recife/PE, Itajaí/SC and Rio de Janeiro/RJ, by applying the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). On the one hand, the considered inputs were the number of berths, number of docks and piers and static storage capacity. On the other hand, the only analyzed output was the amount of cargo handled. In order to achieve such objective, it was necessary to broaden the knowledge and understanding about the aforementioned tool and identify potential improvements to the studied case.
