Resumo: Recent studies have shown that the application of cryogenic treatment in steel can cause improvements in mechanical properties and microstructure. However, the effects in the material are poorly understood. Some authors observed improvement in roughness, microstructure, abrasion resistance, hardness, fatigue resistance, among others. This study looked steel specimens with high hardenability, especially the SAE 4340 steel, chosen for its wide use, which passed by welding, cooling to room temperature and subsequent cryogenic treatment at various times, to observe the improvements provided by the thermal treatment regarding its microstructure, hardness and mechanical resistance. The treatment proved effective in raising the hardness of the specimens in relation to a base body, also increasing its mechanical resistance, according to the microstructural changes found.
