Resumo: In the present undergraduate thesis, both experimental investigation and numerical analysis of combined natural convection heat transfer and thermal radiation, was performed in a rectangular plate-fin. The experimental investigation of this problem was settled at the Laboratory of Thermal Control (LabCT), by means of an experimental setup developed specially for this particular case. A thermographic camera of high performance was also utilized. For the calculation of the experimental uncertainties, the simple sampling technique was adopted. The numerical analysis was done at the Computational Research Laboratory through simulations using ANSYS/FluentTM 14.5 software. The governing equations with their respective boundary conditions were solved numerically by the Control Volume Method, within a single domain through a coupled procedure. All the thermophysical properties of the fluid and solid regions were considered constant and were obtained from the library of the Engineering Equation SolverTM software (ESSTM). In order to validate the procedure, a comparison of the numerical and experimental analysis was performed with success. Finally, a numerical optimization proposal was presented providing an optimum fin height, where it was found a lower value for the thermal resistance and a higher overall thermal conductance value when compared with the original ones.
