Resumo: The present work proposes the characterization and comparison, by means of optical microscopy, of two coating materials obtained by thermal spraying. The thermal spraying through electric arc process was used to deposit aluminum ER 5356 and 309 LS stainless steel on aluminum substrate with the same spraying parameters. Through the optical microscopy, the specimens were analyzed according to the thickness, interface, quality and uniformity of the coated layers. As a result of the study it was possible to observe that the aluminum coated samples had thicker layers of coating, besides having a thorough coating over the entire surface, unlike stainless steel that presented much lower thickness values and a coating with uncovered regions considering the parameters used.
