This research presents, in the form of literature review, the emergence and evolution of studies on the definite integral, highlighting key mathematicians who contributed to its development, including some Greek thinkers who made significant discoveries and mathematicians such as Newton and Leibniz, century seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the historical moment in which mathematics consolidated into solid paths and these mathematicians were able to establish a relationship between differentiation and integration, formulating the fundamental theorem of calculus. In this review we present still some mathematicians who inserted the notion of limits and sum to integral calculus. This work is also presented some properties of the definite integral and important theorems and concepts. Finally exposed is an application of the definite integral in a problem situation in everyday civil engineering. |
