Resumo: The present study has evaluated the envelope energy efficiency of a single family steel frame residence at Curitiba (PR – Brazil). The evaluation was done based on a technical regimentation from Inmetro (National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology), called RTQ-R. Some suggestions for modifications on solar and opening orientation, increases on ventilation and lighting areas, and wall thermal capacity, provided an increase on efficiency rate from C to B. With natural ventilation, the steel frame dwelling with proposed adaptations presented similar energy efficiency of the same dwelling built according to the Brazilian typical construction system (efficiency rating B). When artificially conditioned, however, envelope efficiency from these buildings was different: rating A for steel frame and rating E for typical system. The steel frame dwelling with proposed improvements and with an exterior solar shading device installed can be built in almost all Brazilian bioclimatic zones with adequate energy efficiency (rating B). Only bioclimatic zone number 7 must have some additional requirements to achieve the same rating.
