Resumo: The present study deals with the housing issue - one of the main challenges faced by the government and the civil construction sector - considering the population growth and the scarcity of natural resources. In addition to this, there is already known great problem of housing shortage, which in Curitiba represents the lack of more than seventy thousand units. The use of prefabricated wood systems presents itself as a good alternative facing the environmental issues currently in focus, because prefabrication is a streamlined process that optimizes the use of natural resources, increasing the speed of construction and improving the final quality of the product. Wood is a renewable resource that captures carbon and has a low energy consumption in its process of manufacture. This research aims to investigate the prefabricated wood systems for housing available in the city of Curitiba and its metropolitan area. For its examination, questionnaires were applied in companies and the analysed results indicate that more initiatives need to be sorted out in order to prefabricated wooden houses become a good alternative for the housing problem in a sustainable way. Systems in wood are still not competitive with the masonry, but the main issues yet to be solved regard the origin and species of the wood available, its appropriateness to the Code of Performance in Housing Buildings and, finally, to overcome the actual prejudice of the population towards the use of wood.
