Resumo: Curitiba’s urban planning has created sectors termed 'structural axes'. They work as inducers to the city linear growth and densification through verticalization so that infrastructure does not have to be enlarged. However, the high densification can only be accomplished through the verticalization, with tall buildings, which block solar incidence in adjacent building blocks, yielding negative effects on indoor environmental comfort levels, both thermal and luminic, during winter time with a corresponding rise of energy demand for artificial heating or lighting systems. This study aims to analyse the impact of high rise buildings on the adjacent areas through the study of three different structural axes areas. By means of the solar envelope concept, it is possible to establish building height without compromising solar access of adjacent areas for given seasons and time periods.
