Resumo: The ground transportation is the most used way in Brazil for people to go to work. It is estimated that 0,2% of the world population died in traffic accidents on 2010, generating a cost of until 2% of GDP from low and medium budget countries. An accident occurs due to a combination of many factors, like human, vehicle and the environment. To mitigate the severity of an accident some factors are fundamental on the road to protect the users, for example vertical and horizontal road signs, restraint and auxiliary devices and road paving. This study evaluated the safety conditions of some specific federal highways in Brazil near urban and industrial regions with big vehicles flux. After a video recording, protection factors were analyzed for each one of the 35 kilometers in one way of the stretch. For each parameter were tabbed values zero or one to define conformity according to applicability, existence and conservation of safety systems. The main objective was obtain the percentage data of this conformity from road systems, with secondary objectives of verifying the accordance of the roads with adequate safety levels, analyze the environment as a contributing factor to the severity of an accident and comparison between toll and not toll roads. The results showed that the conformity rates of signs and restraint and auxiliary devices are below 80%, while the pavement rates reaches 90%. With these numbers the study concluded that the roads are not in a satisfactory safety level and, therefore, is a factor that can worsen and accident. Furthermore, the global average of conformity in toll highways was 75%, while in non-toll roads was 61%.
