Resumo: When checking the cause of the fires, most cases present a set of flaws ranging from the way the architectural design was conceived to the lack of supervision of these enterprises. All these accidents teach us that prevention will always be the most efficient measure (MORAES, 2006). At first the underlying objectives of fire safety are: prevention, protection of life and property, but some authors further complete this list. BUKOWISKI and BABRAUSKAS (1994). So, this paper aims to show how the correct and cautious specification of finishing materials and coatings can assist in the passive protection of building fires, as wrong choices can contribute to the spread of fire and aggravate the incident. In order to carry out this work, bibliographical research was used and an analysis of case studies was carried out, which resulted in a flowchart with the intention of contributing to the identification of the flaws found in the investigated process and showing how professionals can take small preventive measures that do all the difference in the control of a fire.
