Resumo: With reliability engineering concepts it is possible to study cost optimization, that is the objective of this work and one of the main pillars of any company in a competitive scenario. The paradigm that only preventive maintenance can offers lower costs should be analyzed case-by-case. More than 20 thousand maintenance data from railroad bearings were analyzed (from corrective and preventive reasons). To verify the influence of time on the scrap rate, bearing samples were also evaluated for different groups with different operating times. Maintenance reliability curves have shown that the current maintenance strategy for EFVM ore wagons is predominantly corrective with approximately 80% of the bearings being removed for some abnormality before the 78-month preventative periodic plan. Even with different design capacity, the behavior of maintenance reliability curves is similar. Based on reliability and scrap rates it was possible to evaluate that the current strategy for bearings presents lower cost compared to the other periods of the study.
