Resumo: The high cost of the rail transport maintenance can be split into the permanent way cost and the rolling stock. This last one, represented in Brazil for the diesel-electric locomotives, the item more expensive is the diesel engine. The impact of this component maintenance results in high costs of rail operation and maintenance which decrease the profits and spoil the expansion of this type of transportation. The objective of this project is to realize a technological field research with alternatives of maintenance strategy comparing, by the LCC methodology, which one is the less expensive and more operationally viable. The result was a combination of preventive maintenance and a dimensioned stock of the components.
