Resumo: The purpose of this study is to analyze the evolution of memory in the brain of the elderly and present the benefits of learning a foreign language for these individuals in order to stimulate memory and prevent neurodegenerative diseases. To that aim, research was made to find how the brain functions and also collect information about memory such as its definition, how memory is acquired and the various kinds of memory involved in the process of learning a foreign language. At a second phase, the study focused on cognitive decline and man's cognitive skills deterioration. It was also necessary to study the brain areas related to the process of learning a foreign language, understanding how it reacts to the process of a foreign language acquisition. Another important part of this study was concerned to brain flexibility and the elderly abilities to learn a foreign language. Special focus was given to neurobiological, physical and social changes for the elderly involved in the language acquisition process, making it clear that memory is strongly stimulated, which results in positive transformations in seniors' lives.
