Resumo: The objective of this work is to identify the characteristics, production and operating costs through a comparative study between hydraulic excavators and motoscrapers. The method used was the search of the manuals of National Department of Transportation Infrastructure (DNIT), in specialized literature, on information provided by the manufacturers of the equipment and the professional experience of the author. The result was found that the cost per m ³ excavator is below the motoscraper, ranging from 23% to 55% with the growth of D.M.T. in 1st Category material and 36% to 54% in 2nd Category material. The hydraulic excavator works on any type of material, even in conditions of high humidity. On the other hand, the motoscrapers have higher production than the excavators, not require operators with ability to delicate excavations and move on their own, without the need of using auxiliary equipments. Hydraulic excavators are equipment with more versatility and lower production costs. Despite this, it is not advisable to leave aside the use of motoscrapers which, when they work in favorable situations, can pro vide large amounts of excavated material.
