Resumo: Considering developing countries, as is the case of Brazil, the capital goods industry performs an important role in the economy. The heavy industry machinery sector must fulfil specific demands to strengthen and modernize the infrastructure. These particular requirements are, usually, satisfied from modifications that are implemented in equipments supplies by original manufacturers. This customization process, normally, started from a formal order, depends on a set of redesign activities. In practice, it has been observed that, in several cases, the customization approach in this segment is based on a “trial and error” strategy, being weakly systematized and heavily dependent on the experience of the team members. From that, the repeatability and reproducibility in those processes and activities is low, which induces to a reduced reuse of tested solutions and high level of reworking. Therefore, this paper presents a set of systematic procedures to support the redesign activities with focus on customization of equipments found in the heavy industry machinery. The developed approach is based on recommendations from literature associated to best practices found in a field survey. A descriptive application, derived from a real customization case, illustrates the set of procedures usage. The preliminary results indicate that the approach proposed has the potential to be widely applied in heavy industry machinery sector and correlated areas.
