Resumo: The exploration of natural resources has become the foundation of the current model of economic development. In front of these circumstances, it is necessary to build the idea of sustainability that has been largely reflected in society, including civil construction. By searching for less polluting buildings, it is necessary to establish able means of verifying if that buildings are in fact environmentally sustainable. The certification systems that classify the environmental performance level of buildings constructed or still in process of construction proved to be the most effective method for this purpose. The present work is based on data collection in order to facilitate access to information on Environmental Assessment Systems (AQUA) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The methodology adopted for the development of the work consisted in the merge of information, through bibliographical and documentary research of websites, magazines and scientific articles. It is concluded that the certification systems presented can serve as a measure that drives the development and application of technologies that improve the environmental performance of buildings and of these certification systems in Brazil.
