Resumo: Upon reaching the required criteria to apply for retirement, it was found that some civil servants choose not to do so, and thus continue performing their professional duties. According to this choice, this research aims to investigate what motivation lead federal civil servants, teachers of a technological university, to postpone retirement, and to verify the perceptions of respondents about retirement and the aspects considered relevant to the preparation and transition to this new phase of life. As a research tool, we opted for a qualitative approach, through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. For the interviews, ten teachers of the career called EBTT (Basic, Technical and Technological Teaching), who have reached the criteria to retire but remain on active duty, were selected. After the interviews, analysis of data was performed. The results showed that the motivation for these teachers to remain working is due to the fact of feeling productive and healthy, enjoying the occupation and workplace. They find personal fulfillment in the university environment and the possibility of being constantly updated in their fields. The perception of retirement is seen as a time of freedom and accomplishment, but picking the right time to retire and definitely terminate the labor relationship generates insecurities and uncertainties in the respondents. Thus, a program to prepare people for retirement is seen as critical because, in addition to helping the servant in the planning and adaptation, can awaken new interests and skills.
