Resumo: The study was conducted in a large industrial company that holds national leadership in the manufacturing sector, in which observes that the process of exploration, analysis and decision making, related to new technologies implementation, occurs in an unstructured and informal way, causing the company to follow different directions or without the ideal strategic planning alignment. The work aims at a technology investment appraisal process proposal, analogous to the process of Stage-Gate product development, also taking into account the intangibles, such as those present in advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs). And so, the research consists not just of a case study, but of a research-action with qualitative features, based on interviews and meetings with those involved in the studied process. The case study highlights the company’s process of exploration and analysis of investments in technology as a lacking in standardization and formalization process. The main result is a proposal of a process characterized by stages of qualitative, technical and financial analyzes besides the multiple gates, the essence of Stage-Gate concept, created by Robert G. Cooper.
