The study sought to identify how the writer represented modernity through which the country passed at this historic time. The starting point for research is the main character of the story, noting how his authority is represented in the interior of Brazil at a time when the State was expanding its influence in most regions of the country, this remoteness through technology, politics and authority, with the latter aspect represents the main thrust of the study, through a comparison between what was practiced by the Government throughout the country and what the Laird Soropita did on his farm, this character represents a jagunço to leave this life, due to an inheritance received, and leave violent practices of enforcement authority installs itself on a farm in which he is the sole authority with this, however the time by which the country had been passed when the Government begins the resume of former colonels the authority that belongs to youSoropita, can no longer determine the laws, as it did in the band of irregulars to whom it belonged, but follow the rules state. His farm and the entire region of narrative space, General, suffer the early influences of new technologies coming to the region in historical period indicated. These innovations were coming into the interior of the country not only with objects, but also by the influence of people who came from other places already entered in a culture evolved with modern civil practice, in relation to the custom of the interior of the State of Minas Gerais. Nesta monografia analisou-se o conto Dão-Lalalão (O Devente) do escritor mineiro João Guimarães Rosa, verificando como se dá a representação de um momento histórico importante para o Brasil, a década de 1930 até o inicio de 1940, período em que se passa a narrativa do conto selecionado. O estudo procurou identificar como o escritor representou a modernidade pela qual o país passava nesse tempo histórico. O ponto de partida para a investigação é a personagem principal do conto, observando como sua autoridade é representada no interior do Brasil numa época em que o Estado estava ampliando as sua influência nas regiões mais recônditas do país, isso por meio da tecnologia, política e autoridade, sendo que este último aspecto representa o mote principal do estudo, por meio de uma comparação entre a o que era praticado pelo governo em todo o país e o que o latifundiário Soropita fazia em sua fazenda, esta personagem, representa um jagunço que sair desta vida, devido a uma herança recebida, e deixar as práticas violentas de imposição da autoridade instala-se numa fazenda na qual ele é a única autoridade presente, no entanto o momento pelo qual o país vinha passado, quando o Governo começa a retomar dos antigo coronéis a autoridade que lhe pertence, Soropita já não pode determinar as leis, como fazia no bando de jagunços ao qual pertenceu e sim seguir as regras estatais. Sua fazenda e toda a região das Gerais, espaço da narrativa, sofrem as primeiras influências das novas tecnologias que chegavam à região no período histórico indicado.
