The development of this research is based on the comprehension of how the historical and detective narratives are joined into the corpus under analysis. Fonseca reminds – through one of the greatest characteristics of his work, the detective narrative – an important fact in the Brazilian historiography, as the text handles the historical events of 1954, the political facts that culminated in Getúlio Vargas’ suicide, the president of the republic in this time. However, the narrative construction does not follow the classical principles that guide the historical and detective sub-genres. Thus, it is understood that this deconstruction derivates from the prerogatives of the Postmodernism, period that the artist innovates in the texts elaboration, confronting the tradition and, in the attempt to subvert the conventions proposes a criticism in the system that is inserted. Este trabalho visa analisar o romance Agosto (1990), de Rubem Fonseca, a partir da desconstrução dos subgêneros que fazem parte do texto: o histórico e o policial. O desenvolvimento da pesquisa é no sentido de compreender como ocorre a articulação da narrativa histórica e policial no corpus em análise. Sendo que Fonseca traz à tona – através de uma das grandes características que compreendem a sua obra, a narrativa policial – um fato importante na historiografia brasileira, pois o texto aborda os acontecimentos históricos de 1954, no campo da política, que culminaram no suicídio de Getúlio Vargas, presidente da república na época. Contudo, tal estrutura narrativa não segue os preceitos clássicos que norteiam os subgêneros histórico e policial.
