Resumo: Currently much of the cabling used in traditional LocalLANs is metallic. However, due to the immense potential of the optical fiber, its significant reduction of cost and present several advantages over metallic networks such as immunity to electromagnetic interference, electric energy consumption, higher transmission rates and distance. And with the evolution of the architecture of multipoint point network and the already known Passive Optical Network (PON), having as main characteristic the use of passive components. This work follows a methodology that aims to present and compare the LAN and PON LAN (Passive Optical Network for Local Area Network) networks.
