Resumo: This work is thematic learning difficulties in mathematics of students who failed the 6th grade level of a State College city of Santa Cruz de Monte Castelo – PR. The goal is to identify these difficulties through a questionnaire applied to teachers and students and also present teaching techniques that can mitigate the problems encountered. The research is divided into two moments: Literature, containing a literature review of various authors who lecture on the topic and field research with questionnaires to teachers and students involved and still presenting activities that can mitigate the shortcomings raised by questionnaires. The questionnaires showed some difficulties, among which we can highlight the basic operations (especially multiplication and division), interpretation and problem solving, understanding of fractions and multiplication tables. From these data were applied to activities involving the contents of the difficulties raised in order to reduce such deficiencies. So can - be concluded that to improve the quality of teaching is fundamental and necessary to the teacher innovate and diversify the methodology used to encourage students to build knowledge and create further interest in the content. This is not an easy task, nor brings immediate results, but it is necessary in view of existing needs in schools
